ABSTRACT

This work is on digital pointing device, which is also known as digital mouse. Mouse is known as an input device of computer which helps to control cursor that is visible on the computer screen while moving the mouse on flat surface place. This device was built around three major components – arduino, accelerometer and Bluetooth module. Arduino microcontroller acts as the heart of the circuit, accelerometer gives out the acceleration along the X and Y-axis and to make the whole system wireless while a bluetooth module is used to transfer the signal wirelessly to your system. The main aim of this work is to build an ardiuno microcontroller based mouse.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                       INTRODUCTION
1.1                                          BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A computer mouse is a hand-held pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface. This motion is typically translated into the motion of a pointer on a display, which allows a smooth control of the graphical user interface of a computer.
Mouse is also known as a hand-controlled electromechanical device for interacting with a digital computer that has a graphical user interface. The mouse can be moved around on a flat surface to control the movement of a cursor on the computer display screen. Equipped with one or more buttons, it can be used to select text, activate programs, or move items around the screen by quickly pressing and releasing one of the buttons (“clicking”) or by keeping a button depressed while moving the device (“clicking and dragging”). Mechanical mice convert the movement of a ball into cursor movement, and optical mice use a beam from a light-emitting diode or a laser. American inventor Douglas Engelbart invented the mouse in 1963–64.
The first public demonstration of a mouse controlling a computer system was in 1968. Mice originally used two separate wheels to track movement across a surface; one in the X-dimension, and one in the Y. Later, the standard design shifted to utilise a ball rolling on a surface to detect motion. Most modern mice use optical sensors that have no moving parts. Though originally all mice were connected to a computer by a cable, some modern mice are cordless, relying on short-range radio communication with the connected system.
In addition to moving a cursor, computer mice have one or more buttons to allow operations such as selection of a menu item on a display. Mice often also feature other elements, such as touch surfaces and scroll wheels, which enable additional control and dimensional input.
However, this work focuses on constructing a digital pointing device using arduino as the heart of the device.

    1.                                       PROBLEM STATEMENT

Traditional mouse uses ball roller that controls the movement of the cursor on the computer which makes it compulsory to use flat surface for operation. More also, traditional mouse need services on regular basis, use numerous components and is dust sensitive. Digital mouse was invented to eliminate the use of numerous components in building mouse which is always seen in traditional computer mouse – by using arduino and instead of using ball roller, buttons are used – which makes it durable.

1.3                      AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The main aim of this work is to build a digital pointed device. The objectives are:

  1. To construct the device using arduino microcontroller
  2. To understand how to program arduino microcontroller.
  3. To understand the working and operating principle of digital mouse

1.4                                   SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this work is to build a digital pointing device. This device was built around an arduino and 3D interactive method to interact with their consoles with the help of a handheld controller. It uses the accelerometer to locate your gestures for a game and send it to the system wirelessly.

1.5                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
This research work will throw more light on the best techniques for building digital pointing device. This study will also be designed to be of immense benefit user of computer.
Finally, it will also serve as a useful piece of information for both producers and users of computer system.

1.6                                                 LIMITATION OF STUDY
As we all know that no human effort to achieve a set of goals goes without difficulties, certain constraints were encountered in the course of carrying out this project and they are as follows:-

  1. Difficulty in information collection: I found it too difficult in laying hands of useful information regarding this work and this course me to many electronics hobbyist sites in search of solution.
  2. Financial Constraint:    Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).
  3. Time Constraint: The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

1.7                                             RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In the course of carrying this study, numerous sources were used which most of them are by visiting libraries, consulting journal and news papers and online research which Google was the major source that was used.

1.8                                     PROJECT ORGANISATION
The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work,   chapter two presents the literature review of the study,  chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.

CHAPTER TWO: The chapter one of this work has been displayed above. The complete chapter two of "construction of a digital pointing device (mouse)" is also available. Order full work to download. Chapter two of "construction of a digital pointing device (mouse)" consists of the literature review. In this chapter all the related work on "construction of a digital pointing device (mouse)" was reviewed.

CHAPTER THREE: The complete chapter three of "construction of a digital pointing device (mouse)" is available. Order full work to download. Chapter three of "construction of a digital pointing device (mouse)" consists of the methodology. In this chapter all the method used in carrying out this work was discussed.

CHAPTER FOUR: The complete chapter four of "construction of a digital pointing device (mouse)" is available. Order full work to download. Chapter four of "construction of a digital pointing device (mouse)" consists of all the test conducted during the work and the result gotten after the whole work
