CONSTRUCTION OF AN ELECTRICAL STANDING FAN

ABSTRACT

An electric standing fan includes a fan shaft driven by a fan motor supported by a motor support. An oscillating device includes a rotational shaft connected to the motor support for driving the motor support to oscillate. A transmission gear has an axle connected to the rotational shaft and a gear wheel mounted around the axle and driven by a synchronous motor. An oscillating angle limiting switch detects a rotational angle of the rotational shaft and the gear wheel and sends a signal indicative of the rotational angle.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION
A fan is a machine used to create flow within a fluid, typically a gas such as air. The fan consists of a rotating arrangement of vanes or blades which act on the fluid. The rotating assembly of blades and hub is known as an impeller, a rotor, or a runner. Usually, it is contained within some form of housing or case. This may direct the airflow or increase safety by preventing objects from contacting the fan blades. Most fans are powered by electric motors, but other sources of power may be used, including hydraulic motors and internal combustion engines. Fans produce flows with high volume and low pressure (although higher than ambient pressure), as opposed to compressors which produce high pressures at a comparatively low volume. A fan blade will often rotate when exposed to a fluid stream, and devices that take advantage of this, such as anemometers and wind turbines, often have designs similar to that of a fan.
An electric fan allowing selection of oscillating angles and including an oscillating angle limitation switch to limit an oscillating angle of the electric fan.

Electric fans generally include a fan driven by a motor to provide air currents for cooling purposes. Although air conditioners are widely used, electric fans are still an option in view of costs and energy conservation in many families, offices, public areas, and industries requiring dissipation of heat.
Electric standing fans include a power on/off switch and a plurality of speed buttons to allow selection of the speed of the motors of the electric fans for adjusting the wind output. Some of the electric fans include a rotary mechanism to allow rotation of a seat of the motor such that the fan can oscillate in an angle relative to a base of the electric fan, providing wind output in a wider range. However, the oscillating angle of the fan cannot be adjusted. Namely, the fan can only oscillate in a preset angle of the electric fan, leading to limitation to the wind output.

1.1                                             OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
A complete standing fan has an adjustable height for convenient operation, having oscillating heads for more air distribution and great for cooling large rooms. The objective of this work is to construct a standing fan.

1.2                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
Apart from cooling, electric standing fans also circulate the air and keep it in motion, maintaining a fresh breeze that cools as well as keeping humidity levels in check. Electric standing fans also add ventilation and prevent the inhalation of dangerous gases and fumes.
1.3                                           LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

  • Every type of fan generates noise from the rapid flow of air around blades and obstacles, and sometimes from the motor. Fan noise has been found to be roughly proportional to the fifth power of fan speed; halving speed reduces noise by about 15 dB.
  • Is not compact and not  easy transport compare to other types of fan

1.4                                          APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
Typical applications include climate control and personal thermal comfort (e.g., an electric table or floor fan), vehicle and machinery cooling systems, ventilation, fume extraction, winnowing (e.g., separating chaff of cereal grains), removing dust (e.g. in a vacuum cleaner), drying (usually in combination with heat) and to provide draft for a fire. While fans are often used to cool people, they do not actually cool air (if anything, electric fans warm it slightly due to the warming of their motors), but work by evaporative cooling of sweat and increased heat convection into the surrounding air due to the airflow from the fans. Thus, fans may become ineffective at cooling the body if the surrounding air is near body temperature and contains high humidity.

1.5                          PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION
The various stages involved in the development of this project have been properly put into five chapters to enhance comprehensive and concise reading. In this project thesis, the project is organized sequentially as follows:
Chapter one of this work is on the introduction to an electric standing fan. In this chapter, the background, significance, objective limitation and problem of an electric standing fan were discussed.
Chapter two is on literature review of an electric standing fan. In this chapter, all the literature pertaining to this work was reviewed.
Chapter three is on design methodology. In this chapter all the method involved during the design and construction were discussed.
Chapter four is on testing analysis. All testing that result accurate functionality was analyzed.
Chapter five is on conclusion, recommendation and references.
