1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
A motherboard provides the electrical connections by which the other components of the system communicate. Unlike a backplane, it also contains the central processing unit and hosts other subsystems and devices.
A typical desktop computer has its microprocessor, main memory, and other essential components connected to the motherboard. Other components such as external storage, controllers for video display and sound, and peripheral devices may be attached to the motherboard as plug-in cards or via cables; in modern microcomputers, it is increasingly common to integrate some of these peripherals into the motherboard itself.
A motherboard hosts so many circuits embedded in the PCB that send and receive data signals and if a circuit gets interrupted due to shorting, then your motherboard will stop functioning.
A short circuit occurs when a current to travel along an unintended path with no or very low electrical impedance.
The most common problems that arise when using personal computers are power problems can be very frustrating especially when you really need to use the laptop and the power isn't flowing perfectly through device.
This could be due to broken power jacks or a laptop short circuit motherboard. The latter is a more challenging problem since detecting the short circuit in the first place can be difficult. However, this work is aimed at building a simple device for detecting short circuit on a computer motherboard.
1.2 Problem statement
A motherboard hosts so many circuits embedded in the PCB that send and receive data signals and if a circuit gets interrupted due to shorting, then your motherboard will stop functioning. A short circuit happens whenever a positive and negative terminal in the circuit gets connected through some means. Detecting short circuit can be too difficult in that it cannot be detected by sensing and also to use the multimeter may require basic knowledge. To make the detection very simple, this portable device was built.
1.3 Aim and objectives of the study
The main aim of this work is to build a low cost short circuit tester for a computer motherboard. The objectives of the work are:
- To build the device at low cost
- To make short circuit troubleshooting easy
- To ensure that the motherboard is in good condition.
1.4 Significance of the study
This study will serve as a means of making the reader to understand what short circuit in a motherboard is all about and what causes short circuit in a computer motherboard. To the student involved, this study will serve as a means of becoming familiar with electronics components.

1.6 Scope of the study
The scope of this work covers the use electronic circuit to build a short circuit detecting circuit. The circuit was built around voltage comparactor (op-amps) and other electronics components (Bakshi et al, 2010).

Short circuit detecting circuit can be very useful to the following set of people:

- Electronics hobbyist
1.8 Definition of terms
Computer motherboard: The motherboard is a printed circuit board and foundation of a computer that is the biggest board in a computer chassis. It allocates power and allows communication to and between the CPU, RAM, and all other computer hardware components.
Short circuit: A short circuit is an abnormal connection between two nodes of an electric circuit intended to be at different voltages.
Detector: a device or instrument designed to detect the occurrence of short circuit on a computer motherboard.
