Oscilloscopes nowadays we use today are CRO or DSO which is little bit difficult to use as well as not portable and consumes more power. The Wireless Oscilloscope android application helps one to observe the waveform of the closed circuit. This application is supported by all Smartphone’s and tablet computers (Receiver’s) that work on Android operating system. The device is embedded with a Bluetooth module to provide connectivity to a device. Hence it is easy portable and easy installation. This paper presents the design and implementation of a low cost, portable, light-weight; low power, dual-channel oscilloscope, consisting of a hardware device and a software application. 1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Oscilloscopes are an important tool in the armory of the electronics engineer or tester. An oscilloscope is an item of electronic test equipment that enables waveforms to be seen and in this way makes it very much easier to see any problems occurring in an electronics circuit.
The name oscilloscope comes from the fact that it enables oscillations to be viewed. Sometimes the name cathode-ray oscilloscope, or CRO was used. The reason for this was that cathode ray tubes (CRT) were used to display the waveforms. Nowadays these test instruments just tend to be referred to as oscilloscopes, or just scopes.
Oscilloscope is basic measurement device which is used for measuring purpose. It helps to you observe how the voltage behave at any moment in time. In the CRO major disadvantage of CRO are to spend huge amount of money to buy it and carry to difficult to carry from one place to another place. Now a day’s portable Oscilloscope is available in the market nut they are very costly. In our project, we implement digital oscilloscope using Bluetooth and android system consisting of hardware device and software device application. New Technology, with low power consumption, dual Channel, portable. It is a Bluetooth embedded device which will capture input voltage signal and transmitted them to an external device Android is a Linux operating system design basically for touch screen mobile device such as a smart phone. Advantage of this android application is mainly environmental sustainable application, high mobility ,three time lesser than the cost of CRO and wireless the cathode ray oscilloscope is type of electronic test instrument that allow observation of constantly varying signal voltage, usually as a tow-dimensional graph of one or more electrical potential difference using the vertical or Y-axis, plotted as function as a time .this allow the measurement of peak-to-peak voltage of a waveform, the frequency of periodic signal , the time between pulse , the time taken for a signal to rise to full amplitude , and relative timing of several related signal.
The device is equipped with a Bluetooth module to provide connectivity to a device with Bluetooth, running the Android operating system (OS), in order to display the waveforms. Android OS is selected because there are a decent number of Android device users and most of these devices satisfy the requirements of the oscilloscope’s software application. The Software application developed for Android receives the data transmitted from the hardware device and plots the waveform according to the display settings configured by the user. [1] By using mode switch we can select the measured parameter.
This Measurement System is also known as Mini-Oscilloscope which present some Cathode Ray Oscilloscope features that help in the measurement of Triangular wave and Square wave, Sine wave, Resistance Value. The External Bluetooth module operational with the microcontroller will transport the input signal to an Android Device’s, running on the Android operating system. Using external Bluetooth gadget and display of Android Device, the system becomes more useable and convenient. In this Measurement system we used HC-05 Bluetooth module, AVRATmega16 Microcontroller and Android application with Android Smartphone for this whole application.[5]
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
oscilloscopes currently in the market are very expensive, less power efficient, big and have small low resolution displays. This paper presents the design and implementation of a low cost, portable, light-weight; low power, single channel oscilloscope consisting of a hardware device and a software application. The device is equipped with a Bluetooth module to provide connectivity to a device with Bluetooth, running the Android operating system (OS), in order to display the waveforms.
1.3 PROJECT OBJECTIVE
- To design a system to measure the signals and display it wirelessly on an Android OS based phone as well as LCD Display.
- To design a low cost and effective measuring device.
- To make a handy and user-friendly application, this can be effectively used by students and researchers. The Inputs given will be processed by an embedded system and will be transmitted via a wireless communication protocol (in our case Bluetooth Module). A java based application will be developed on the Android OS platform which will accept this incoming data and visualize the same.
This paper presents an oscilloscope implemented using new technology, with low power consumption. It is a Bluetooth embedded device which will capture input voltage signals and transmit them to an external device, such as a smart-phone, running the Android operating system. Since the device is wireless it can make use of the smartphone’s display and processing power.
1.4 APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
Oscilloscopes are an essential piece of electronic test equipment for any electronics laboratory or area testing electronics hardware whether within RF design, general electronics circuit design, electronics manufacturing, service, repair or anywhere that electronic circuits and the waveforms on them need to be investigated.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This research work will throw more light on the best techniques for observing waveforms. This study will also be designed to be of immense benefit to all electrical engineers and hobbyist.
It will also serve as a guide to whoever that wants to purchase an oscilloscope.
Finally, it will also serve as a useful piece of information for both producers and users of oscilloscope.
1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
As we all know that no human effort to achieve a set of goals goes without difficulties, certain constraints were encountered in the course of carrying out this project and they are as follows:-
- Difficulty in information collection: I found it too difficult in laying hands of useful information regarding this work and this course me to visit different libraries and internet for solution which Google was the major site that was visited.
- Difficulty in parts gathering: I found it too difficult when gathering electronics parts used for the prototype.
Bandwidth determines an oscilloscopes ability to measure a signal. As signal frequency rises, the oscilloscope’s ability to accurately display the signal, decreases. Without adequate bandwidth, all the other features on an oscilloscope mean nothing.
Rise time describes the frequency range of an oscilloscope. An oscilloscope with faster rise time will accurately capture details of fast transitions.
Sample rate is specified in samples per second or S/s and refers to how frequently an oscilloscope takes a snapshot of the signal. The higher the sample rate, the greater the detail of the displayed waveform.
Waveform capture rate is expressed as waveforms per second (wfms/s) which refers to how quickly an oscilloscope acquires waveforms.
1.9 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In the course of carrying this study, numerous sources were used which most of them are by visiting libraries, consulting journal and news papers and online research which Google was the major source that was used.
