This circuit will open and close the curtain of your home and office just by pushing a switch. So with the help of this unique circuit, we do not need to move from one place to open and close the curtain. This circuit is used for household use, particularly for smaller doors and windows. Due to its small size and readily available components, it can be effortlessly fixed with a curtain.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A curtain is described as is a piece of cloth intended to block or obscure light, or drafts, or (in the case of a shower curtain) water. A curtain is also the movable screen or drape in a theater that separates the stage from the auditorium or that serves as a backdrop/background (Free Dictionary By Farlex, 2012).
Curtains are often hung on the inside of a building's windows to block the passage of light. For instance, at night to aid sleeping, or to stop light from escaping outside the building (stopping people outside from being able to see inside, often for privacy reasons). In this application, they are also known as "draperies". Curtains hung over a doorway are known as portières (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2012) Curtains come in a variety of shapes, materials, sizes, colors and patterns. They often have their own sections within department stores, while some shops are completely dedicated to selling curtains.
Curtains vary according to cleanability, ultraviolet light deterioration, oil and dust retention, noise absorption, fire resistance, and life span. Curtains may be operated by hand, with cords, by press-button pads or remote-controlled computers. They are held out of the way of the window by means of curtain tie-backs. Measuring curtain sizes needed for each window varies greatly according to the type of curtain needed, window size, and type and weight of curtain.
Curtains are a form of window treatment, and complete the overall appearance of the interior of the house. Window treatment helps control the ambiance and flow of natural light into the room. The effect of drapery or curtains is best seen in daylight, and with proper indoor light positioning, can look attractive even at night according to Brian D. Coleman (2016)
Traditional opening and closing of curtain is done manually by the user. The proposed system will reduce destruction of hangers and hookers used to hang a curtain on the window; it will reduce wastage of time and will also provide your home an occupied appearance. This work is aimed at building a device that is capable of opening and closing of curtain automatically by pressing a switch.
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Curtain is a piece of cloth hang in the front of windows intended to control light. A curtain is opened in the morning to allow light from outside to enter the room, also it is closed in the evening to block light from escaping outside the room. Traditionally, opening and closing of curtain at our homes is done manually which lead to destruction of hangers and hookers. The proposed system will reduce destruction of hangers and hookers used to hang a curtain on the window; it will reduce wastage of time and will also provide your home an occupied appearance.
1.3 AIM/OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The main aim of the project was to enable opening and closing of curtain automatically by pressing a switch. The objectives are:
- To protect curtains from damages
- To reduce human labour
- To save time
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
This research work will throw more light on the operation of electric motor. This study will also be designed to be of immense benefit to all the users of electric motor most especially in industries.
It will also serve as a guide to whoever that wants to purchase curtain opening and closing circuit.
Finally, it will also serve as a useful piece of information for both producers and users of electric motor.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
This work is on building a curtain opening and closing mechanism. This circuit will open and close the curtain of your home and office just by pushing a switch. So with the help of this unique circuit, we do not need to move from one place to open and close the curtain.
The main electronic components used are two ICs CD4013 and ULN2003. CD4013 IC consists of two D Flip-flops which can be in two states 0 or 1 and can store information. ULN2003 is a motor driver which is used for controlling the stepper motor in the circuit. In CD4013 first D flip-flop is wired for opening the curtain and other for closing the curtain. Switch S1 and S2 are connected to the first flip-flop. S1 is connected to the 6th pin (set) of CD4013. When we press switch S1, pin 6 goes high and get a high output through pin 1. As this pin is connected to the 2nd pin of motor driver ULN2003 it will drive the stepper motor in clockwise direction to open curtain.
1.6 LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT
As we all know that no human effort to achieve a set of goals goes without difficulties, certain constraints were encountered in the course of carrying out this project and they are as follows:-
- Difficulty in information collection: I found it too difficult in laying hands of useful information regarding this work and this course me to visit different libraries and internet for solution.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).
- Time Constraint: The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.
- Difficulty in parts gathering: I found it too difficult when gathering electronics parts used for the prototype.
1.7 APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
The device can be used in the following places:
- Home
- Office
- Industries
- Worship centers, etc.
1.8 ADVANTAGES OF THE PROJECT
This device is small in size and readily available components, and it can be effortlessly fixed with a curtain.
