ABSTRACT

This work is on a motor control panel using contactors. This trainer provides a good grounding in mastering control technology using various types of electrical contactor circuits. The trainer features modular components are mounted on to a rack system to facilitate the setting up of various types and configurations of circuits. It consists of low voltage electrical components for demonstration and practical exercises in motor starting and control. This trainer is a versatile design and evaluation tool for Education and Training purposes

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                       INTRODUCTION
1.1                                           BAGROUND OF THE PROJECT
Trainer is a self contained set of electronic or electrical circuits that can be interlinked by students to create working circuits.
Motor control panel is used to determine variable frequency AC drive and a 3-phase AC motor used to teach the fundamentals of configuring and operating an AC drive. It can be used to teach motor drive troubleshooting skills, such as drive input, motor input, and drive contactor troubleshooting.
This study was motivated due to the fact that Motor Control is prevalent in all industries, from conveyor control to driving large utility pumps. With this trainer, one can initiate motor control training to wherever it is needed.
Unfortunately it is impractical to loan out this trainers to students, for reason such as: the limited number of digital trainers (compared to the student numbers); the need to use the trainers in multiple repeat laboratories; and the effort required to replace any lost boards. Additionally, the cost of the trainer boards makes it unfeasible for students to purchase their own board. Hence students are limited to using the trainers within their scheduled laboratory sessions, which inhibits the students gaining extended practice in order to improve their skills.
To provide a method for students to test motor circuits outside the scheduled laboratory times, this device was introduced. The work is a simple and inexpensive limited version of trainer. The device needed be simple enough for the students to construct it by themselves, and to be affordable enough so that the students could permanently retain the device. The result was the ‘PortBuffer’ system; its development and implementation is described in the following sections.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT
Due to practical that occurs in schools laboratory and motor controlling devices that are used in many companies, setting up motor controlling circuit anytime the need arise consumes time, energy, and this can also lead to misplacing of some electrical components. In order to solve this problem, a motor control panel trainer was built.  This provide available training ground for students and quick usage for companies.

1.3                                           OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
This objective of this work is to study and constructs training modules which control the speed and direction of an ac motor. It is a versatile trainer used as an instructional aid in colleges and universities. Motor control panel trainer circuit prototyping system, for students in their first year machine course. The primary goal was to design an inexpensive, simple to use device that could be retained by students, so that they could undertake experimentation in school or at home.

1.4                                          PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
This Motor control panel trainer is designed to provide further and more extensive studies about some important motor control circuits. The trainer offers wide range of most common digital application circuits that are used in digital electronics.

1.5                                          SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
Motor control panel trainer is a general-purpose experiment board equipped with different built-in circuits as well as a standard breadboard. It is as a flexible instructional aid for academic institutions and a powerful development kit in Labs.

1.6                                          APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
This work covers electric contactor control of AC electric motors found in industrial, commercial, and residential applications. Learners study industry-relevant skills including how to operate, install, design, and troubleshoot AC electric motor control circuits for various applications.

1.7                                               BENEFIT OF THE PROJECT
This device and its components will prepare learners for work opportunities in industries where motor control is used in applications like conveyor control and driving large utility pumps.

1.8                                          PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION
The various stages involved in the development of this project have been properly put into five chapters to enhance comprehensive and concise reading. In this project thesis, the project is organized sequentially as follows:
Chapter one of this work is on the introduction to the study. In this chapter, the background, significance, objective limitation and problem of the study were discussed.
Chapter two is on literature review of this study. In this chapter, all the literature pertaining to this work was reviewed.
Chapter three is on design methodology. In this chapter all the method involved during the design and construction were discussed.
Chapter four is on testing analysis. All testing that result accurate functionality was analyzed.
Chapter five is on conclusion, recommendation and references.
