These 3 phase motor is supplied with 3 three-phase AC supply and is widely used in ships for heavier loads. This research is purposed to established a new method is simple and good to operate the three phase induction motor on single phase power by using capacitor. The object used in this research was three phase induction motor that has the standard of 2 HP, 440 volt, Wye connection, 2 Pole, 50 Hz, 3000 RPM, 3.08 Amp. The result of this research showed that the method could work well to control the motor to operate properly to load 85% of the full load. In general the motor has better performance when operating on single phase power system in all load cases (low at high load). The motor could operate with power factor close to unity, higher speed and better efficiency. The motor operated with higher current harmonic distortion with low loads but lower current harmonic distortion at high loads. There for it is very good to operate the motor at high load up to 85% of its full load.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT
An induction motor or asynchronous motor is an AC motor in which the electric current in the rotor needed to produce torque is obtained by electromagnetic induction from the magnetic field of the stator winding.
These 3 phase motor is supplied with 3 three-phase AC supply and is widely used in ships for heavier loads. 3 phase induction motors are of two types, squirrel cage and slip ring motors. Squirrel cage motors are widely used on ships due to their rugged construction and simple design. Induction motors are used in almost all machinery system of the ship such as crane motor, propulsion motor, blower motor, sea water pump motor, and even small synchronous motor.
The three phase induction motor has three coils identities are separated from each other across 1200 electricity that powered by Three phase power system. They will produce resultant magnetic flux that rotates like poles actual magnets spinning mechanism. RMS voltage developed in coils of motor is shown in below fig-1.
If the starting torque is not enough, it can be improved by adding a motor star capacitor with a capacitance value of approximately two times the pointed. This capacitor must be evaluated after having carried out test of real application test. The three phase motor can operate in single phase power supply with the help of permanent CAPACITOR. This small thing (capacitor) very helpful to make three phase motor running on single phase power supply.
Normally three phase induction motor operates on three phase power system, to improve the starting torque of the motors; they can operate on a single phase supply which is the aim of this work.
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
There are two different types of supply in induction motor which is according to the electrical design, in induction we have single phase induction motor and three phase induction motor. Single phase induction motor are designed to be operated on a single phase power supply while a three phase power supply are designed to be operated on a three phase power supply. Now, I challenge is that these machine power supply cannot be interchanged, that using three phase in a single phase power supply and vice versa. This has been a challenge for a very long time, that people of now finding difficult to purchase the type of motor they wanted due to the kind of supply they were made for due and due to the fact that is not everywhere that three phase supply are been used. In other to solve this problem this study was introduced which deals with a method of using a single phase supply to power the three phase induction motor.
1.3 AIM OF THE PROJECT
The aim of this work is to establish a new, simple and good method is to operate the three phase induction motor on single phase power by using capacitor.
1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
At the end of this work the student involved shall be able to:
- Understand the working principle of three phase induction motor
- Study the constructional principle of three phase induction motor
- Use single phase power supply to power a three phase induction motor.
1.5 PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
The main purpose of this work is to provide a cheap and easy way of powering a three phase induction motor

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
With this study, people are now finding it easier to use an induction motor anywhere and anytime without considering the type of supply for the induction motor because it provide consumers a cheap, easy and simple way of using three phase induction motor.
1.7 APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
This study is very useful to both producers and consumers of the three phase induction motor. To producer, it increases their production rate while to consumers, it give them the opportunity to operate the machine without the fear of getting burnt by the power supply.
1.8 LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT
- The problem with this work is that the user has to dismantle the machine before making the connection.
- It requires some level of professionalism.
- The selection of the rating of the capacitor to use is also a problem.
