ABSTRACT

The guard is also susceptible to sleep at times. It was then that home security system based upon electronic circuits were developed which proved to be highly reliable and were appreciated by the people as they were relieved from constant monitoring of their homes. An intelligent Home security system is a monitoring device that monitors and alerts the user via SMS in case of a burglary attempt or fire accident at that place – house or a commercial place.
This device has the ability of sending SMS to the homeowner on his/her mobile number in case of an intruder, fire or wrong entry alert which also triggers a CCTV which captures the activity of the intruder

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                             INTRODUCTION
1.1                                  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
This work is on design and construction of a SMS based home security system. Security is the main concern for everyone. Everyone wants to live securely in his/her house. Everybody wants themselves to keep safe or secure from various incidents like theft in their house or accidents caused due to LPG gas leakage or accidents due to fire in their house. Now days many times we hear news about house robbery or theft in some houses, bungalows, flats. These robberies or thefts take place when nobody is in house or in some cases we find that robbery take place even if people are in their houses. Another bad news we hear is about accidents are caused or blast happens because of LPG gas cylinder leakage. In house we find that LPG gas is commonly and widely used for cooking purpose. So in every kitchen we find that LPG gas cylinder is placed. However due to some reasons, LPG gas might leak from these cylinders. And because of this LPG gas leakage, fire might be ignited or it can even cause the LPG gas cylinder blast. Which can damage the house or in even worst situations, it can cause life threat to the person living inside the house.
This project has 3 basic modules along with a GSM modem. GSM modem is used to send the SMS whenever there are changes in any of the three modules.
First module of this project detects if any person is entering inside the house. This feature is helpful at night time or whenever we are out of our home.
Second part of project serves the functionality of a door-latch opening using a password entered through keypad. As well as sending this data to a GSM modem through serial port. This module also turns on buzzer if 3 wrong passwords are entered consequently. User can change this password anytime he/she wish using a keypad.
Third module uses LPG gas sensor to detect the gas leakage. If there is leakage then buzzer is turned on.
Another problem / fear are about fire in our house. There can be various reason of this fire being ignited or house getting caught in fire. Reason of fire can be electrical short circuit or due to some other things like candles or oil lamps kept inside our house or because of fireworks in festival season. Early detection of all these problems is really necessary. Sometimes fire lighted is small but if proper attention is not paid to it or if proper actions are not taken to control this fire, then it can convert into big tragedy as this fire can spread in complete house. Same with LPG gas leakage, if it is detected on time and if it is controlled on time then it can avoid a big accident. Also in case of robbery it would be beneficial if we can blow some alarm. Let’s take an example that we are out of our home and theft is going on in our house. In such case if we are intimated about theft then we can inform our neighbors, then they can create some noise or take some appropriate action so that this theft can be avoided. Let’s take another problem; sometimes key of our home is lost. If we do not replace our lock and if these keys are found by thieves then it can cause robbery. We all know that duplicate key can be created within few minutes and also key duplication is easy. These are the disadvantages of traditional locking system which uses a key and a lock. To overcome all the above stated disadvantages of existing system we have designed a GSM based home security system. It can avoid these undesirable situations, hazardous conditions like LPG gas leakage, fire ignition and theft.

1.2                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT
The need for having a constant home protection has always been there. But in the recent times, considering a dramatic rise in petty crimes like robbery and theft, the need has been more strongly felt to have a fool proof protection of the belongings and the family members. Home security has come a long way in the last few decades. It was in the hands of a guard or security personnel (like police) who manually provided surveillance during nights in the earlier days, but it was not fool proof as it was only normal for him to have momentary lapse of concentration. This device brought solution to this need. It ensures adequate protection against intruders.

1.3                     AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
In this project, the main of this work is to designed a simple but very efficient home security that has a function of sending sms to the homeowner on his/her mobile number in case of an intruder, fire or wrong entry alert which also trigger a cctv which captures the activity of the intruder and fire accident. The objectives of the study are:

  1. To build the system prototype model
  2. To create a comfort in the minds of house owners.
  3. To increase security in our homes.

1.3                               SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

This project has three basic modules along with a GSM modem.

1.4                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

  1. Constant Protection: If you install a monitored alarm system in your home, you and your family have round-the-clock the protection against break-ins. Some systems also have fire alarms built in, which provides additional reassurance. The constant protection of an alarm system is particularly comforting when you may be away from your home for an extended period or you must leave your children home alone for an evening. It also means that your home is protected while you are sleeping so you can have peace of mind about your family's safety and get a good night's sleep.
  2. Deterrent to Criminals: Most home alarm systems provide small lawn signs or placards for your window that indicate that your home is protected by a security company. In many cases, the presence of this type of sign alone may persuade burglars and other criminals to pass over your home and move on to a dwelling that is not protected by a security system. Be sure to clearly display the decals and signs from your monitoring company to fully advertise your home's security.
  3. Lower Insurance Rates: While there is a significant cost to install a home alarm system, it can mean a financial advantage as well. Your insurance company may actually adjust the rate on your homeowners insurance policy if you have a system installed in your home. Because your home is protected from theft – and in many cases, fire – costly incidences that might require you to make a claim are less likely to occur in your home. As a result, your insurance company can lower your rate.
  4. Remote indication: With the use of GSM technology owner of the house or industry get remote indication through SMS. So even if the user is away from home or industry, he/she will be intimated about the hazardous or undesirable conditions / situations inside the house.
  5. This system is fully automated. So once this system is installed inside home or industry, then it does not require any human interaction to operate.
With the use of this system we can save the life of person inside home / industry. Since the accidents caused due to fire and LPG gas leakage can cause life threat.
  6. Also the property inside house and various materials inside the house and industry are saved from to theft and from fire detection.
  7. This system is Cost effective. Also it is Fast and efficient

1.5                                       PROBLEM OF THE PROJECT
Cut Phone Line: If your alarm system is connected to your security company by phone line only, you can run into problems. A burglar may cut your phone line before entering your home and all monitoring and communication with your alarm company is terminated. As a result, it is a good idea to have a cellular radio installed with your system, which will allow communication with the security company even if the phone line is cut.

1.6 SUMMARY OF REVIEW
AyushAgarwal, R.C.Joshi (2012), has developed a low cost GSM/GPRS based wireless home security system which includes wireless security sensor nodes and a GSM/GPRS gateway. It has the following features: (a) low cost, (b) low power consumption, (c) simple installation, (d) fast response and (e) simple user interface. In general, GSM modem acts as the interface between the users and the sensors nodes. There are 3 types of sensor nodes applied in the system which include the door security nodes, infrared sensor nodes, and fire alarm nodes. This architecture includes components such as filters, amplifiers, analog to digital converters and communication interfaces. The system used a wireless transceiver module to transfer data between gateway and sensor nodes. Every sensor node comprises a microprocessor and a wireless transceiver module. The function of the microprocessor is to receive and analyze the signal from the sensors’ node as well as the current status of the nodes. This system also consists of a sleep timer and switch mode pump circuit, which reduces of the power consumption.
I.Syam Krishna, J. Ravindra, developed a wireless security system where an alarm system is programmed in a graphical user interface (GUI). The system is used to monitor the RFID reader, RFID tag and the GSM terminal. The information obtained from the tag is sent to the server in a RF link that is exhibited in a GUI. If the laptop is stolen from the covered region, the alarm system will start to draw attention. Meanwhile, the laptop owner will be notified by an alert message. In addition, the alarm system will not be stopped until the laptop is put back in the covered region, or the program is stopped/terminated. RFID have been available for many years for reading bar codes RFID tag located several meters away. It is increasingly being used in other applications ranging from inventory management to anti-counterfeiting protection. In a wireless security system (WSS) [4], a RFID tag is attached to the laptop and RFID reader is connected to server. If the laptop is stolen from the reader, the alarm system will be triggered to draw attention with loud noise. The laptop owner will be notified with short messaging service (SMS) from the server via GSM module system in a few seconds. Alternatively, it can be improved with Bluetooth technology which is embedded in most of mobile laptop today. The GSM terminal is used as the SMS interface to send messages. Generally the notebook acts as the base station to run the program. Usually GSM terminal comes with a RS232 connector to external terminal equipment, and the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cardholder and the external connector.
Z Bing et al in [11] has developed a security system against asset theft by using radio frequency identification technology. The system consists of five main parts: (a) RFID reader and tag, (b) GUI, (c) database system, (d) CCTV and (e) wireless transmitter and receiver. The RFID reader is installed at the entrance of the campus and the tags are attached on/in student ID cards and their properties. The program of the developed system has the capabilities of investigating the identification process, database management and controlling function of the hardware. GUI is used in a vehicle security system where the information is controlled via the GUI. The system is activated when the tag is read while the motorcycle is being located within the effective range. The system will automatically record this incident and exhibit the information on the monitor. Any theft occurrence will turn the monitor on automatically with the alarm signal which alerts other systems. When the burglar occurs, the CCTV will also be started for recording is immediately. The motorcycle engine is shut off automatically when the asset theft occurs however this requires a further investigation.

Mahmud S.A, Mohameed G.A, [2006] monitors everything by moving cameras. The system can increase the efficiency of monitoring and can eliminate the blind spots of fixed cameras. In this system, a mobile manipulator is developed which is equipped with cameras at the arm end for purpose of monitoring. The system is based on SMS technology using any GSM modem/mobile. The proposed remote control system works from anywhere in the world. Nwalozie G. C et al, International Journal of Computer Science and Mobile Computing, Vol.4 Issue.6, June- 2015, pg. 1177-1184 © 2015, IJCSMC All Rights Reserved 1179 The proposed system has been designed to work with GSM technology, which will generate a message, every time an intruder tries to get unauthorized access of the property. GSM being one of the most popular and used means of mobile communication makes it viable and unique in a way that many of the systems/applications designed can be made to work with GSM because it is used worldwide, implemented and followed standards. The proposed system, on intrusion, triggers the intrusion to the owner via SMS and continues to do so with a constant interval of time. One of the distinguished features the system provides is that it allows the owner to prompt an action via SMS from a far off place.

CHAPTER FIVE
5.1                                                           CONCLUSION
The sms based home security system has been designed and tested with the mobile network. The user can get alerts anywhere through the GSM technology thus making the system location independent. A flexible way to control and explore the services of the mobile, AT commands is used in the system. The communication of home is only through the SMS which has been tested with the mobile networks and is working on any mobile network.
This security home feature become draw much attention in the future. People getting more concerned to protect their house from unauthorized people. This system can monitor a house by use of sensors that integrated with a microcontroller and a GSM unit. SMS use to alert users via mobile phone when a possible intrusion occur. Today almost everyone using mobile phone so by use this system user will not have to carry additional device to monitor their house. This system is design using modularity to become a flexible system that can be add more sensors without change the whole system, only add some sensors to increase systems functionality. So this system is a modular home security system by using SMS function to communicate between system and user.
