ABSTRACT

Solar cooker refers to the renewable energy system that collects energy from the sun in the form of heat rather than using the sun’s energy to produce electricity, as is the case with solar photovoltaics. Solar cooker systems can be used to provide space heating and water heating to be used in residential, commercial, or industrial facilities. The basic components in home solar cooker systems include: Collectors to take the heat from the sun and pass it circuit that controls the heater.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION
Solar cooking is used widely in developing countries as an alternative to wood, charcoal, coal, and dung fires, all of which create environmental problems for the country, and health problems for the cook, and they are expensive. Solar cookers are also "environmentally-friendly" and non-polluting; food will not burn; fewer problems with boil-over; keeps house cooler and reduces summer cooling costs; economical — cookers can be made from recycled material and cost nothing to operate; safe — no risk of fire.

Solar cookers are easy to make and even easier to use. The simplest design can be made in less than 1/2 hour and will cook a hot-dog or tray of cookies in under an hour! A larger panel cooker or a box cooker will cook a pot of dried beans in less than a day, and there is no need to "watch the pot" — just place it in the cooker in the morning and return in the evening. With an understanding of basic principles of solar energy and access to simple materials such as cardboard, aluminum foil, and glass, one can build an effective solar cooking device. Whether the need is to cook food, pasteurize water, or dry fish or grain, the basic principles of solar, heat transfer, and materials apply. We look forward to the application of a wide variety of materials and techniques as people make direct use of the sun's energy.

1.2                                             OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The aim of this project is to design a cooker that is powered using renewal energy source – solar.

1.3                                              PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
A solar cooker is a device which uses the energy of direct sunlight to heat, cook or pasteurize food. The purpose of introducing solar cooker is to provide a cheap means of cooking that does not involve using fuel, gas, wood or electricity. Parabolic troughs are used to concentrate sunlight for solar-energy purposes.

1.4                                     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
Water boiled with solar cooker is used in showers, kitchen and bathroom faucets, swimming pools, washing machines, Jacuzzis, and other appliances that require warm water.
Free hot water – an average sunny day in Nigeria generate sufficient solar energy to provide all your hot water without using electricity.
Save Money – approximately 50% of your electricity bill could be saved. Using solar cooker systems could drastically reduce the size of installed generator sets.
An investment – solar cooker system will add value to your property.
Environmental Friendly – solar energy is clean energy. No pollution.
Self-sufficiency – with a solar cooking system you are protected from the ever-increasing cost and erratic.

1.5                                         ADVANTAGES OF THE PROJECT
(1) It does not require constant attendance while cooking.
(2) Since food cooks slowly, it becomes more nutritious.
(3) The fibers in the cereal remain intact.
(4) It does not require fuel. It requires only sunlight.
(5) It can also be used as a oven for baking.

1.6                                              PROBLEM OF THE PROJECT
Cooking with solar cookers obviously requires sunlight, which makes it difficult to use during winter months and on rainy days. Cooking also takes a significantly longer time compared to conventional methods. Users must schedule their cooking time and maximize the use of sunlight. As a result, preparation must start early in the morning so that the food can be placed in the cooker by noon.
Solar cookers are not as efficient at retaining heat as conventional cooking devices. Factors such as wind, rain, and snow can seriously hinder operation, and in such weather conditions, even after the food is cooked, it will lose its warmth very quickly. For most homes, using only a solar cooker is inadvisable. You will need a backup appliance that operates on gas or electricity when weather is unfavorable or whenever the sun is hidden.

1.7                                          APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT

Applications and uses of solar cooker are listed below:
  • Water Distillation
  • Solar Smelting
  • Roasting coffee and peanut for commercial purposes.
  • Separation of Beeswax and capping
  • Wax melting
  • Sterilization of Medical apparatus
  • Grain Sterilization
  • Ironing
  • Water Purification
  • Dehydration

1.8                                               TYPES OF SOLAR COOKER
These are two solar thermal techniques that are commonly used:

  • Passive solar heating: This technique relies on the natural tendency for water to circulate freely as some of it warms (in the sun) while some cools. There are no mechanical parts used in passive solar heating systems.
  • Active solar heating: In these systems, pumps and other mechanical components use electricity to circulate water or a heat medium through the system.

1.9                                        PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION
The various stages involved in the development of this project have been properly put into five chapters to enhance comprehensive and concise reading. In this project thesis, the project is organized sequentially as follows:
Chapter one of this work is on the introduction to this study. In this chapter, the background a solar cooker, significance a solar cooker, scope a solar cooker, objective a solar cooker, the need (benefit) a solar cooker,  limitation and problem a solar cooker, advantages a solar cooker was discussed.
