ABSTRACT

 

A time based automatic switch is an automatic timer switch that turns an appliance for the desired time duration. After the preset time duration, the timer automatically switches off, disconnecting the appliance from the power supply. The aim of this work is to build a time based automatic switch for a 3.8kva generator. The time duration for which the generator should be ‘on’ can be set from 1 to 99 minutes [1].

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION
1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The switch may be connected to an electric circuit operating from mains power, including via a relay or contactor; or low voltage, including battery-operated equipment in vehicles. It may be built into power circuits (as with a central heating or water heater timer), plugged into a wall outlet with equipment plugged into the timer instead of directly into the power point; or built into equipment as, for example, a sleep timer that turns off a television receiver after a set period [1].
The mechanism may be mechanical (e.g., clockwork; rarely used nowadays), electromechanical (e.g., a slowly rotating geared motor that mechanically operates switches) or electronic, with semiconductor timing circuitry and switching devices and no moving parts.
The timer may switch equipment on, off, or both, at a preset time or times, after a preset interval, or. This time based automatic switch switches generator, usually off, after a preset time [1][2].

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT
Traditionally, a generator ON and OFF is done by manually pressing the generator switch. Sometimes, with this manual operation the user of the generator might forget to switch off the generator at his desired time. If it is at the night hour, the user might sleep off leaving the generator ON throughout the night. This leads to wasting of electric energy and fuel. However, this device was invented to solve this problem. This automatic switch increases the life of the appliance and also saves power consumption [1][2].

1.3                                                   AIM OF THE PROJECT
The aim of this work is to build an automatic switch that turns a generator ‘ON’ for the desired time duration. After the preset time duration, the timer automatically switches off the generator. The time duration for which the appliance should be ‘on’ can be set from 1 to 99 minutes [1][2].

1.4                                              PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
The purpose of this work is to have an automatic means of ON and OFF of a generator set with having a direct contact with the switch.

1.5                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
This switch obviates the need to continuously monitor the appliance—an advantage over the manual switch. It can be used to switch on or switch off any electrical home appliance at a predetermined time. Switching an appliance on or off in a timely manner increases the life of the appliance and also saves power consumption [1][2].

1.6                                          APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
This device is mainly made for a generator set and it can also be used to control the ON and OFF of other home appliances. The switch also finds industrial applications, where the machines which control the processes can be run for the desired time [1][2].

1.7                                           LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT
i. This device can only be used to control one generator.
ii. It can control generator from 750w to 3.8kw. When used with generator with additional power, a contactor can be used in place of a relay.

1.8                                                         PROJECT ORGANISATION
The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work,   chapter two presents the literature review of the study,  chapter three describes the methods applied,  chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
