ABSTRACT

In this work, we purpose an advanced automatic light control system that is capable of replacing the old light control system because the manual control of light is not effective in this modern era. By using this system energy consumption is additionally reduced because nowadays the manual lights aren't transitioned even the daylight comes and also switched on earlier before sunset. Automatic lighting system using Passive Infra-Red (PIR) motion sensor and Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) sensor, where the lights will automatically turn ON and OFF by detecting the presence of human and amount of luminous energy in the environment at that moment. In this work we used an Arduino microcontroller for controlling the sensors and output device light-emitting diode. The system itself detects whether there is a need for light or not.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                               INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Industrial electronics has turned the whole world into a global village. One of the most indispensable aspects of these phenomena is automation, which forms the nucleus of the present day electronics technology. Considering the milestone, it was desired to make the choice of the project research on the design and implementation of an automatic lighting system.
Automatic lighting system design using motion sensor and LDR, this system will detect motion of people or object send input signal to microcontroller which will used to ON and OFF lamp. We can certainly minimize the consumption of electrical power, which is the one of most common and major problems in Nigeria. With the help of this system we can eliminate this shortage by minimizing the wastage of electrical power or saving our generated power.

1.2. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Traditional means of switching lighting system involves manual operation, which is labour intensive, time taken and at the same time exposes the operator to electric shock. The proposed work seeks to eliminate the stress, time and inconvenience associated with manual switching of security lights. It has a wide range of real-life applications basically in automation and can be used in surveillance system.

1.3.   AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
This project is aimed at designing, simulating and implanting a cheap and reliable Automatic Lighting System using LDR and PIR sensor.
The system has to satisfy the following:

  1. To implement an auto-intensity control of LED-based on LDR and PIR motion sensor
  2. To save energy thereby reducing power consumption.
  3. To eliminate manual switching of lights

1.4     SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT
This project is focused on building an automated light system which turns ON and OFF lights when ambient light falls below a specific intensity using LDR sensor, and also using a PIR motion sensor which detects the motion of the object such as human and animal passing through it, using this motion of object lights (LEDs) are turned ON. LDR and PIR motion sensor interface with an arduino microcontroller, as the surrounding light decreases LDR sensor turn on the LED light and also when PIR sensor detects motion it turns ON lights.

1.5     APPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT
This system can be implemented in park light, street light, room light, smoke detection, and person detection. The automatic street light system does not need manual work to switch ON and OFF lights.

1.6     DEFINITION OF TERMS
LIGHT INTENSITY: the measurable amount of brightness of light
AUTOMATIC: a device working by itself with little or no direct human control
PHOTODETECTORS (PHOTOSENSORS): are sensors of light or other electromagnetic radiation.

1.7  PROJECT REPORT ORGANISATION
This project is presented in six chapters to appropriately illustrate the steps involved in its design and implementation. Chapter one introduces the designs objectives, general introduces the design objectives, general description of the project and significances of the project. Chapter two is fundamentally the literature review and issues relating to its implementation. Chapter three confers the system methodology. Chapter four elaborates on the system design and analysis. Chapter five summarizes the project theories conclusion and recommendations.
