ABSTRACT

Electricity is the principal force that powers modern society. It lights buildings and streets, runs computers and telephones, drives trains and subways and operates all variety of motors and machines
It is important to recognize that electricity is not mined or harvested, it must be manufactured. Since it is not easily stored in quantity, it must be manufactured at the time of demand.
Since, the demand for electricity in this area of the world is alarming, there is the need for the production or generation of constant electricity, due to the epileptic condition of electricity in the country. This gives rise to the design and construction of a mobile 1kva rechargeable power supply which is the main aim of this study.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                      INTRODUCTION
1.1                                     BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT
A power supply is an electronic device that supplies electric energy to an electrical load. The primary function of a power supply is to convert one form of electrical energy to another and, as a result, power supplies are sometimes referred to as electric power converters. Some power supplies are discrete, stand-alone devices, whereas others are built into larger devices along with their loads. Examples of the latter include power supplies found in desktop computers and consumer electronics devices.
Every power supply must obtain the energy it supplies to its load, as well as any energy it consumes while performing that task, from an energy source. Depending on its design, a power supply may obtain energy from various types of energy sources, including electrical energy transmission systems, energy storage devices such as a batteries and fuel cells, electromechanical systems such as generators and alternators, solar power converters, or another power supply.
All power supplies have a power input, which receives energy from the energy source, and a power output that delivers energy to the load.
There are different types of power supply but in this work we are considering a rechargeable power supply. Rechargeable power supply is popular for charging devices. They can also be used as a power supply for various powered devices such as lights and small fans. They usually recharge with a  power supply. The rechargeable power supply includes a control circuit that both regulates charging of the battery and converts the battery voltage for the device [8] [9].
This work is focused on building a mobile 1kva rechargeable power supply using available components and at low cost.

1.2                                PROBLEM STATEMENT
Conventional power supply goes off whenever there is power outage from the national grid, and this can result loss of data and interruption of our electrical appliances when they are in use and power outage due to natural cause and faults are usually unannounced. It was due to this erratic nature of our power supply that led to building a rechargeable power supply, and it was built to overcome these challenges.

1.3                       AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The main aim of the study is to build a device that can produce a rechargeable power supply 220VAC.
The objectives are:

  • To construct the system prototype model
  • To back-up the erratic power supply by PHCN.
  • To ensure the protection of the back-up source consumer equipment and supply.
  • To avoid noise in the surrounding which is produced by gasoline engines such as diesel and petro generators.
  • To save cost of fueling and maintenance of gasoline engine generators.
  • To reduce damage of electronic appliances as a result of unstable power supply.
  • To ensure that, there is continuous power supply.

1.4                                SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
This study will serve as a means of studying in details how a sustainable energy can be achieved.
As a student of electrical and electronics department, this study has gone along way exposing me to different electronics components – there applications, connections and implementations.

1.5                                  SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
The scope of this study covers building a rechargeable device which can be recharged a 12v battery from mains 220VAC power supply and at the same time convert 12V DC into 230V AC. It can be used to power portable loads like night lamps, fan, tv and cordless telephones, but can be modified into a powerful inverter by adding more MOSFETs.

1.6                                 LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

  • Expensive when compared to traditional generators
  • The power supply can power a few appliances for a short period
  • The power rating of the work is 1kva

1.7                            PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuss the introductory part of the work, chapter two presents the literature review of the study, chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.

CHAPTER FIVE

5.1                                    CONCLUSION
Having carefully selected the entire component that is required for the construction of the rechargeable power supply according to the circuit diagram we were able to design and construct a workable rechargeable power supply. As with any power supply it must be housed in a clean environment and operations should be by will trained individual.     

5.2                                    RECOMMENDATION

This project is designed to be used in our homes, offices and industries or wherever there is need for rechargeable power supply. And should be used and maintain by a qualified personnel.
There is still further improvement demanded from use, mostly in the area of producing an output of 5 and 12v output for charging and powering mobile devices such as lanterns and mobile phones.
