The designing and fabrication of an electric throwing wheel (which is also known as electric potter’s wheel) for shaping ceramic wares has been carried out using a 2-horse power motor. Machine elements were designed considering the wheel shaft, pulley and belt systems, stresses on bolts, bearing, moments of inertia and radius of gyration of the wheel head, as well as speed control system. Design calculations and observation during test running of the machines specifies 16.18kg of clay as the maximum load the wheel head can carry during the ceramic shaping operation.

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
- Background of the study
Technology is a contemporary tool in solving contemporary challenges in all fields of studies and works of life. Fine and Applied Arts has several tools and machine that are being used to carry out creative works that serve aesthetical and functional values. Ceramic is a unit in Fine and Applied Arts which employs the use of equipment and tools such as, kilns, kiln furniture’s, blunger, ball mill, pug mill, slab roller, jiggering-jollying, and throwing wheels which is the focus of this paper which is also called Potter’s throwing wheel is a mechanical device used to make object in the round, such as cups, saucers, plates, pots and mugs to mention but a few. Potter’s wheel is of two major types; the electric and manual. The electric is powered with electricity while the manual is manually operated using man power.Potter‟s wheel is a machine that has been in existence since time immemorial. According to Sungmin et al (2014) the horizontal rotating wheel has been in use since antiquity, the potter places a moist lump of clay on it and rotates it with a variable-speed controller. The potter then uses his or her hands or other tools to shape the clay. The potter‟s wheel became widespread not only because of potters‟ know-how and the simple shaping process but also because they can use it to materialize their ideas intuitively and straight forwardly. With this type of wheel potters were able to create complex and organic shapes.
In ceramic processing most especially in pottery, the process of controlling the position of the clay as its pins on a potter's wheel, so that however its form is altered, the clay at every level is made to be the same distance from the axis of the spin is of utmost importance. Most potter's wheels are fabricated with ½ horsepower motors. It has become common experience that higher horse power motors dissipate heat better andare able to create more torque which is what a pottery wheel requires as its load is increased. Therefore, the object of this design is to create a 2-horse power motor operated potter's wheel so that when eventually constructed, both the ½- and 2-horse power ceramic processing machines could be evaluated and appraised in terms of their respective performance indices.
- Problem Statement
The conventional Pottery wheel machine is used to be operated by sewing machine pedal and this involves human effort all through. Based on the problems in the conventional method, it is understood that there is a scope for pedal operated pottery wheel and alternatively with electric motor operated pottery wheel. So, this machine can be work with the pedal mechanism as well as by an electric motor. The human effort and work is more in traditional methods. By implementing this mechanism, the manpower required will be reduced. This design proffered an efficient method of doing forming of an earthen pot and reducing the human work by using electric motor. Its purpose is to efficiently transfer human foot motion through a pedal mechanism and a bevel gear setup to rotate the potter’s wheel to a machine power.
- Aim of the Project
The main aim of the electric Potter’s throwing wheel is to reduce the manual effort required for making the pottery items.
- Objectives
The objectives of this work are:
- To design and fabricate model throwing wheel.
- To modify the design of the existing throwing wheel.
- To use electric motor power to replace human labour
- To save time and cost of fabricating ceramic.
- To increase efficiency and production.
