1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In machine tools, a spindle is a rotating axis of the machine, which often has a shaft at its heart. The shaft itself is called a spindle, but also, in shop-floor practice, the word often is used metonymically to refer to the entire rotary unit, including not only the shaft itself, but its bearings and anything attached to it (chuck, etc.)(Hoffman et al., 2011).
A machine tool may have several spindles, such as the headstock and tailstock spindles on a bench lathe. The main spindle is usually the biggest one. References to "the spindle" without further qualification imply the main spindle. Some machine tools that specialize in high-volume mass production have a group of 4, 6, or even more main spindles. These are called multispindle machines (Hoffman et al., 2011).
A mechanical shaft is a rotating member, usually of a circular cross-section, either solid or hollow, which transmits power and rotational motion.
A mechanical shaft is a mechanical power transmission element, usually circular in cross-section, either solid or hollow, which transmits torque and rotational motion from one device to another.
Machine elements such as gears, pulleys, flywheels, clutches, and sprockets are mounted on various shaft types and are used to transmit power from the driving device, such as a motor or engine.
Shaft spindles are the rotating part of machine; it holds the tool or workspace. They are short shaft which is used in machines. Example: Spindle in lathe machine. This work focuses on the fabrication of a shaft spindle using catia v5 software.
1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main aim of the study is to fabricate a shaft spindle using catia v5. Theobjectivesoftheprojectare:
- To fabricate a simple and easy to use shaft spindle using involves using catia v5
- To reduce the learning curve of shaft spindle using catia v5
iii. To provide a simple means of designing a shaft spindle.
1.3 ADVANTAGES OF THE SHAFT SPINDLE
- They are less likely to jam.
- They need less maintenance
- They have high torsional strength.
- They have high value of polar moment of inertia.
- They are very strong and less likely to be failure.
- Internal shape of a hollow shaft is hollow therefore they require less material.
1.4 DISADVANTAGES OF SHAFT SPINDLE
- Due to loose coupling they have power loss.
- They generate a constant noise.
- Manufacturing and maintenance costs are high.
- Difficult in manufacturing.
- If failure takes place in shafts then it takes huge time in repairing.
1.5 APPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT
• Small and medium load transmission for four wheels.
• It is very useful in machine shop.
• Industrial Application.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
This study will serve a means of assessing students competency in creativity.During the course of study, the student is put on a sound theoretical foundation of various mechanical engineering subjects and of course, to a satisfactory extent. Opportunities are made available to him to work on different kinds of machines, so that he is exposed to various kinds of manufacturing process.
This study shall serve as a means of making student to become technologically stronger. The student involve shall attain a stage of perfection, when he himself is able to design and fabricate a device.
1.7 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
A spindle is a rotating shaft with a fixture for holding a tool (in the case of a milling, grinding, or drilling spindle) or a workpiece (in the case of a turning spindle). The shaft spindle serves as a support, a positioner, and a rotary drive for the tool or workpiece. The scope of this work covers fabricating this device using catia V5 software.
This report discusses the necessity of the project and various aspects of planning, design, selection of materials, fabrication and testing.

5.1 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.1 CONCLUSION
Incurrentresearchwork,designandfabricationof shaft spindlewas carried out which isused for drilling hole of Ф14.25 mm with178 mm depth. After designing, 3D modelof shaft spindle was created in CATIA V5R20software and finite element analysis wascarried out using solid works software instatic condition. The obtained value of vonMises stress is 9.2516 × 106 N/m2 which islessthanyieldtensilestrengthofthespindlematerial. Also, maximum displacementinthe shaft spindleislessthantheoretical value of maximum permissibledisplacement.Hence, designis safe.
5.2 RECOMMENDATION
For clarity purpose, I recommend that different software should be used in designing this device.
