ELECTRICAL ENERGY AUDIT

ABSTRACT

Electrical energy plays a vital role in our day to day life. Anything cannot be imagined without electricity. As there is a limited amount of resources that can be help us to generate electricity, so this is our keen duty to save these resources or save electricity for our further use and this is only possible by doing an energy audit to a different sector. The aim of this work  is saving electrical energy by conducting an Intelligent Electrical Energy audit.

CHAPTER ONE
1.1                                                        INTRODUCTION
Energy conservation refers to the reducing of energy consumption through using less of an energy service. Energy conservation is different from efficient energy use, which refers to using less energy for a constant service.
In Nigeria the energy conservation is very much essential as the demand in the society is increasing day by day, looking over the scenario, electrical energy audit is done. It is a process of checking how energy is used and identifying the areas where wastage can be minimized if not totally eradicated. [1-2]

A home electrical energy audit, also known as a home energy assessment, is the first step to assess how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. An assessment will show you problems that may, when corrected, save you significant amounts of money over time. A home energy audit is a tally of all of the heat and electricity use in your house. This describes an electrical energy audit, in which you assess the electrical energy demand of the appliances in your home or work in order to find ways to reduce. Often this is done using a spreadsheet and an energy meter such as a KillAWatt. Energy audit consists of several tasks which can be carried out depending on the type of the audit and the function of the audited facility.
It starts with a review of the historical data on energy consumption, which can be compiled from the electricity bills. The energy audit work was carried out by various researchers for the consumption of energy is presented here.

1.2                                               OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The main objective of an electrical energy audit is to analyze the amount of electrical energy used by every device.

1.3                                                PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
Many conserve water by turning off faucets while brushing teeth and fixing leaks, but electricity is hard to see. An electrical home energy audit can help you understand your usage, conserve and even fix some leaks.

1.4                                           SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
When an energy audit is conducted on your home, a professional assess the property to determine how energy-efficient your structure is overall. This kind of audit is a good way to find out where excess energy may be creeping out of your home. It also shows you where elements of your home that are not energy-efficient may contribute to the problem. This is important because lost energy often results in higher utility bills, which can be a financial strain on you as the homeowner.
Because an energy audit reveals virtual cracks in your home's ability to distribute energy -- including heated and cooled air from heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems -- you can address those issues effectively. Solutions include sealing the space around doors and windows and figuring out how to better insulate your home. The result is a cooler-feeling home during the summer months and a warmer home during the winter months.
Because you are no longer heating or cooling the entire outdoor area of your home, you can save money on your electric bill. When the air is contained in the space in which it was mean to distribute heated or cooled air, your system has to work less. This, in turn, means that with less electrical output from your system, you pay less each month in utilities. In fact, according to the Energy Audits Unlimited website, you can save between 20 and 30 percent on the cost to heat or cool your home.
An energy audit can provide satisfaction for those people interested in conserving energy for the sake of the environment. Being more energy efficient means that your home has less of a negative environmental impact on the environment around you. An energy audit also means that you contribute less to global warming because your unit is being more efficient and releasing fewer carcinogens and other harmful emissions into the air.
Your home resale value is greatly improved with a professional energy audit. The renovations that you make to improve energy efficiency will increase the value of your home. In fact, home improvements for the sake of energy efficiency are the only home improvements that actually pay for themselves in the long run.

1.6                                            BENEFITS OF THE STUDY

An energy audit is recommended to determine the energy consumption associated with a facility and the potential savings associated with that energy consumption. From a general point of view, an energy audit provides enormous benefits in different areas:

  • It helps reduce energy costs in your facility.
  • With a reduction in production costs, the competitiveness of your company will be improved.
  • It helps reduce the dependence on foreign energy sources.
  • It helps reduce environmental damage and pollution.
  • It can increase the security of your energy supply.
  • It can reduce the consumption of natural resources.
  • It can reduce damage to the environment associated with the exploitation of resources.
  • It helps reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.

At a particular level, among the major benefits of doing an energy audit are:

  • It helps you to lower energy bills.
  • It enables you to increase the comfort of those in the facility.
  • It helps you to increase the life span of the equipment in your facility.
  • It discovers any unaccounted consumption that may exist at the facility.

In summary, an energy audit can identify energy consumption and energy costs of the facility and it can evolve over time to develop measures to eliminate waste, maximize efficiency and optimize supply energy.
