ABSTRACT

Energy monitoring system is the most significant demands to decrease the energy expenditure energy loss. Smart energy monitoring system technique tracks the usage of energy of different consumers. Hence the advanced information technology needed fast and reliable communication protocol i.e. Internet of Things (IoT) and GSM based Cloud Computing. These are the communication devices which are used to develop the Smart Energy Monitoring System. This paper presents the development of Smart Energy Monitoring system using Cloud Computing and IoT. The cloud computing techniques is helpful to monitor the data as well as store the data in cloud server using two way communication protocol. Hence the proposed system provides the entire electrical information in real time as a live energy report without any delay time.

 

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                      INTRODUCTION
1.1                                        BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data [1, 2]. IoT allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration between the physical world and computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit [3]. "Things," in IoT sense, refers to a wide variety of devices that collect useful data with the help of various existing technologies and autonomously flow such data between other devices [4]. Internet of Things is not the result of a single novel technology; instead, several complementary technical developments provide capabilities that taken together help to bridge the gap between the virtual and physical world [5].
Electricity has become one of the basic requirements for human life, being widely used for domestic, industrial and agricultural purposes etc. Energy monitoring is an important technique for determining the energy efficiency of various device [6]. The recent explosion in urbanization over the past few years has led to energy provision crises because energy produced is less than what is required [7]. The optimum solution of this trending problem is to monitor and control the power consumption. In power system, the number of appliance consuming energy are growing speedily and thus the energy requirement [8]. The need for energy monitoring is becoming a very important task to households, industries, agricultural industries and others due to its insufficiency and cost [9]. Monitoring energy efficiently and conserving it intelligently is a necessity in today’s world. With the rapid increase in residential, commercial, and industrial consumers of electricity throughout the world, it has now become imperative for utilities companies to devise better, non-intrusive, environmentally-safe techniques of gauging utilities’ consumption so that correct energy management can be achieved [10]. Without electric energy it’s almost impossible to survive today and hence important to save and conserve electric energy. To avoid the loss, we need to monitor the power consumption and losses, so that we can efficiently utilize and manage the generated power [11].

In this paper we have  analyzed existing system of energy monitoring which is developed with wireless technology and also discussed about our proposed system of smart energy monitoring using GSM based Cloud computing. The proposed concept consist two way communication between metering infrastructure and the consumer end, also we can obtain the Multiple energy conservation live report in the computer or mobile screen, so that the consumer can get awareness about their power utilities and assessment charge.

1.2                                               PROBLEM STATEMENT
The recent explosion in urbanization over the past few years has necessitated the need for sustainable, efficient, and smart solutions for monitoring energy consumption and management. The conventional domestic energy consumption monitoring systems are incapacitated to automatically monitor, bill and manage energy consumption of IoT homes. Hence, to address this shortcoming, this paper presents an IoT based energy consumption monitoring and controlling device using Atmega328 Microcontroller. The proposed system is able to monitor, bill, control and monitor energy consumption of individual and all appliances.


1.3                                 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Electricity is the heart of the nation; to save the national environmental we should save energy. Hence to save energy, our energy system will get smart. Where as to implement the smart energy monitoring system we required energy monitoring process as in smart manner. The main aim of this study is to carryout a study on the system of smart energy monitoring using GSM based Cloud computing. The objectives of this work are:

  1. To save energy
  2. To monitor energy consumption using internet of things
  3. To store the energy consumed data in cloud server

1.4                                                SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this work covers the use of an IoT    technology to monitor energy consumption and controlling device using Atmega328 Microcontroller. This system is able to monitor, bill, control and monitor energy consumption of individual and all appliances. Furthermore, the system is able to compute the total energy consumption and billing which is automatically sent to consumers, and any Data gotten from this system is saved in Cloud server. The proposed system exhibits an average overall performance accuracy of about 95%. This shows that the proposed system is promising for energy consumption monitoring and management.


1.5                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This work is not just a book, but a useful reference and guide for electrical designers, engineers and all students of the department. Information in this word will help the reader to understand how consumed energy can be controlled and monitored, and also will serve as a means of studying about internet of things (IOT) and cloud server.

    1.                                ADVANTAGES OF THE PROJECT

This device is a  smart, efficient and reliable energy monitoring and management device (system) that is capable of:
Monitoring and measuring both individual and collective appliances consumption rate.

    1. Switch on and off (control) appliance at set times. Automatically generate billing (consumption rate and cost)
    2. Ability to automatically send generated bills to consumers at stipulated time via the internet.
    3. Ability to save consumption history for further analysis

1.5                                             RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In the course of carrying this study, numerous sources were used which most of them are by visiting libraries, consulting journal and news papers and online research which Google was the major source that was used.
