- INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGOUND OF THE PROJECT
Solar Energy is a plentiful, reliable and renewable energy source and is also the cleanest type of energy known to man since it is pollution free and contributes to the reduction of a country’s carbon emissions. Department office depends on electricity for most of their energy consumption needs and the consumption of power in an office building during the day time is much higher which makes them ideally suited to install solar panels and dozens of state and central tax rebate and credit opportunities are available for rooftop-solar systems for the ones interested in using solar energy in department office. Making the switch to generating power on-site from internally free source of energy – the sun can bring down the operating costs of the company for coming decades.
Department office can use solar panels and solar thermal panels for a variety of uses including pre-heating ventilation air, water heating, solar cooling and lighting and electricity.
Installing rooftop solar panels to generate solar energy for department office is a great way to make it a better place to stay in.
Solar system can be set up in department office for lighting, AC and other usage that can help the school away from solely relying on grid electricity and thus reducing electricity bills.
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
In the last decade, Nigeria's major energy sources include wood, coal, oil, gas, tar sands, and hydro power and the cost of producing it is too high which leads to unreliable power supply which makes the institution to alternate their power supply using fuel or diesel generator. The cost of running a generator in the department office is very high in that the cost of fuel is high and the generator itself produces carbon-monoxide which can be dangerous to human health. To solve these problems, solar energy was provided to the department which gives the department a steady power supply and it runs with emitting any carbon.
1.3 AIM/OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objective of this project is to describe how solar energy works and to design a device that can be used to convert solar energy to electric energy for the department office. The objectives of the work are:
- To increase the level of power supply in the department office
- To develop the technologies and knowledge base needed to reduce the cost of consuming electricity.
- to enhanced grid reliability and resiliency.
1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of solar energy for the department office is to have a steady power supply in our department office.
1.5 APPLICATIONS OF THE STUDY
Study can be useful to the student concerned, and also to anyone who wants to be conversant to the usefulness and installation of solar energy.
1.6 ADVANTAGES OF THE STUDY
Solar energy for commercial buildings is a clear choice as rooftop solar power can meet up to 20% of an office building’s electricity requirements in Nigeria. A building with an in-built renewable energy source will become increasingly sought after. 1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
Though there are some challenges associated with installation of solar panels in department office as the costs involved with the equipment is high and requires large surface area to lay the panels. The proper functioning of these panels is hindered by a lot of other various such as environmental pollutants, cloudy and rainy days that blocks the sun’s rays and thus making it necessary to use battery charges to store energy in case of emergencies and other occasions.
