ABSTRACT

Assignment and attendance plays a vital role in evaluating a student. The traditional method of taking Assignment and attendance manually is very time consuming and often leads to human error.
Also there are many challenges that are faced while one adopts a manual method of taking assignment and attendance such as, difficulty in keeping the attendance list over a long period of time, lecturers forgetting the attendance register in the classroom, students illegally marking the attendance of their friends while the roll number is being called out and many more.

This paper elaborates the implementation of Radio Frequency Identification based Student Assignment and attendance Management System using Open Source Software in a multi-user environment.

This would eradicate the deficiencies associated with the manual assignment and attendance system since an automated approach is being adopted.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                                    INTRODUCTION
1.1                                                       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The accessibility of virtually all material on the World Wide Web nowadays have make students less encouraged to come to lectures than ever before (Daniel, 2018) and lecturers are worried about student erratic class presence. Checking students’ class attendance is one of the vital concerns for universities and colleges, because many universities and colleges calculate students’ attendance while giving the final grade for a semester whilst assignment marking  specify the stage they are at in their grading of individual assignments and to control the release of grades to individual students and/or whole cohorts of students. (Daniel, 2018). Administrators or lecturer with a large lecture room may find the hassle of having the attendance sheet being passed around the class and the manual signing of assignment and attendance by students are burdensome and most likely distract them from teaching and getting full attention from the students ((Sen, 2019).
An attempt to solve the above problems, brought about the motivation to research on how to design a system that record attendances of students as well as controlling impersonation among students during lectures and examination  automatically. The proposed system is built using Radio Frequency Identification technology.
The system uses a set of software such as Java, MS Access, NetBeans to record, store and extract student’s attendance.
Java is used for developing a desktop application for marking the assignment and attendance. MS Access is used to create database environment. NetBeans IDE 8.0.2 is used for developing the web portal for accessing attendance. RFID based Student assignment and attendance Management System was built using Open Source Software which reduces the overall cost of development process.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Virtually every lecturers within the various departments in higher institution, still uses the normal technique to record student assignment and attendance by passing attendance sheet to student to write their names and sign. By using this strategy, truant students will ask their course mate to write down their names when they are absence from that class instead of taking permission from the lecturer, lecturers have to analyst the assignment and attendance sheet to record who was absent and who attend the lecture. In the event that the lecture miss place the record sheet, he will have to take the class attendance again which is a stressful and time consuming process. Checking students’ by roll call which involves much stress and time.
calling the students’ surname and marking presence or absent may take roughly around 12-15 minutes out of every lesson time. This project work intend to solve the following problems:
1. Eliminate or reduce the quality time lost through manual checking of student assignment and attendance as well as control impersonation among students
2. Eliminate the manual process of analyzing the assignment and attendance sheet to record student class percentage.
3. The possibility of a courser lecturer losing his assignment and attendance sheet or forgetting to come along with it to class will be eliminated

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Students assignment and Attendance Management System is aimed at implementing a system that aids lecturers of higher institution to record seat assignment and the number of student’s attendance automatically as well as controlling impersonation among students during lectures and examination respectively using Radio Frequency Identification technology. The main objectives of this project are to:

  1. To explore the challenges existing with the manual system and infer solution.
  2. Design and Implement a fully automated system that will record seat assignment and the number of student’s attendance
  3. To test the functionality of the design by using the program to test 20 students.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
This project will be beneficial to lecturers and administrators of Colleges and University around the world with large number of students per class and still us the manual method of taking students seat assignment and class attendance by roll call or signing attendance sheet.

1.5 SCOPE OF STUDY
The scope of this work covers developing an attendance management system using Radio Frequency Identification technology. The study involves the use of suitable Radio Frequency Identification Technology Tag (wireless device) & Reader for this application and secondly the design of Graphic User Interface (GUI) to integrate with Radio Frequency Identification Technology. Java is used for developing a desktop application for marking the attendance. MS Access is used to create database environment. NetBeans IDE 8.0.2 is used for developing the web portal for accessing attendance.

1.6 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS
1. Radio Frequency Identification: is the wireless use of electromagnetic fields to transfer data, for the purposes of automatically identifying and tracking tags attached to objects.
2. Tag: An RFID transponder, typically consisting of an RF coupling element and a microchip that carries identifying data. Tag functionality may range from simple identification to being able to form ad hoc networks.
3. Active Tag: Active RFID uses an internal power source (battery) within the tag to continuously power the tag and its RF communication circuitry. A tag with its own battery that can initiate communications . Passive Tag: A tag with no on-board power source that harvests its energy from a reader provided RF signal.
5. Semi-passive Tag: A tag with an on-board power source that is unable to initiate communications with a reader.
6. Reader: An RFID transceiver, providing read and possibly write access to RFID tags.

CHAPTER FIVE

         5.1                    CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The AMS shows that, by automating assignment and attendance monitoring/management systems, it makes assignment and attendance registering more efficient and productive. Additionally, automated AMS also eliminates the common discrepancies that are often associated with conventional assignment and attendance systems. The RFID-based AMS not only automatically logs each student's presence but also calculates the total percentage of assignment and attendance which is a needed requirement for grading students. Based on the metrics used for testing, the system is error-free, and there is a lower probability of it being cheated as the case is with the manual assignment and attendance system.
The contact tag used for this work, adds a delay in the assignment and attendance registering process. Since each student has to swipe their tag on the reader before the information is retrieved from the tag, this means students have to take turns before the reader reads their tag. Thus, the use of contactless RFID tag is recommended to eliminate this delay. Also, since the MFRC522 reader is incapable of reading tags above the 50mm range, it is recommended that an external antenna is attached to the reader to allow it to read data easily from contactless tags. The designed system makes no adequate provision for security measures to tackle security threats such as Cloning, Impersonation, Remote Attacks, Denial of Service (DoS), and Virus and Malicious attacks. Hence, these refinements are considered in our future works.

The AMS can also be adopted in other organisations like health facilities, industries, e-government etc. So that its application can be extended to different working sectors where there is a need to record and to digitalize the attendance of employees, providing an efficient and reliable assignment and attendance management system. For instance, automation is being used in several spheres of human activities including the accreditation and voting process used during the election in Nigeria. Voters are no longer faced with the tedious task of matching their name and corresponding numbers to their voting details to determine if they are eligible to vote or not. However, to increase the efficiency of the voting process and reduce the needed labour associated with prior manual accreditation systems, it is therefore recommended that a smart electronic voting system (e-voting) be integrated with RFID technology for voter's accreditation and authentication especially in the developing country such as Nigeria. In order, to eradicate election discrepancies and inadequacies such as votes buying, ballot box snatching, loss of lives due to motor accidents and other election violence.
