ABSTRACT

Ectoparasites, including lice, ticks, and mites, inhabit the host skin and depend on their host for sustenance, maturation, and multiplication. Among these, ticks are more prevalent in various regions of Nigeria because of favorable climatic conditions, lack of awareness of livestock keepers' regarding ectoparasite infestation rate, insufficient veterinary services, and inadequate control measures. Ectoparasitic infestation is a primary threat to cost-effective livestock production by damaging skin and transmitting multiple diseases between animals. This study is aimed to determine the prevalence of ectoparasites of sheep in Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION
1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Sheep rearing is one of the most important aspects of agriculture, which has contributed immensely towards the growth and development of the national economy of Nigeria. It contributes significantly in the provision of domestic meat, estimated at over 1626000 t per annum. Sheep play important roles in the livelihood of farmers as they provide a vast range of products and services, such as meat, hide and skin, hairs, horns, bones, manure, security, gifts, religious rituals and medicine (Sertse and Wossene, 2017).
Ectoparasites impinge on sheep and reduce their capacity to provide the above mentioned products and services. Ectoparasites also impede the health of sheep by causing them to loose weight, retard growth and reduce productivity. As a result of their activities, arthropod ectoparasites may have a variety of direct and indirect effects on their hosts (Cornall and Wall, 2015). Ectoparasites particularly ticks are important parasites because of their voracious blood-sucking activity and as vectors of various agents of diseases in both humans and livestock (Hashemi-Fesharki et al., 2014). The growing threat of ectoparasites to sheep production and the tanning industry, needs well-coordinated and urgent control intervention (Cornall and Wall, 2015).
Sheep rearing is one of the main animal husbandry activities in Nigeria mostly in North Eastern region of Nigeria. The aim of this seminar is therefore to determine the prevalence of ectoparasites infesting sheep in Nigeria.

1.2                                    AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The aim of this seminar is to determine the prevalence of ectoparasites infesting sheep in Nigeria. The objectives of the study are:

  1. To have a deep study and understanding  about ectoparasites
  2. To understand the impact of ectoparasites on livestock (sheep)
  3. To review   the   status   and   distribution     of ectoparasites in farm animals.
  4. To review the economic impact of ectoparasites  in farm animals (sheep).
  5. To study the method of controlling and preventing ectoparasites.

1.3                                           SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Generally, ectoparasites cause significant effect on the production, productivity and health of livestock. The seminar will provide an avenue of learning the occurrence and negative impact of ectoparasites in sheep in Nigeria. The seminar will also expose the student involved and readers of this thesis to ectoparasites control measures thereby promoting agricultural productivity.
