ABSTRACT

Over the last decade, a few autonomous ship prototypes have been developed. While Norway is pioneering the technological development of autonomous ships (AS), other countries such as China, Finland and USA have also made significant progress. When the autonomous ships was invented it looks as if that is the end of that technology but recently a modern mariner was also invented which is more digitalized than the autonomous ships, adding a new dimension in the merchant shipping industry. Thus, this study contributes to the maritime literature by (1) providing a review of the AS development projects and the benefits of AS from an economic, environmental and social perspective, (2) suggesting innovative uses of AS in short-sea-shipping (SSS),and conventional shipping, and finally (3) discussing of ship design trend from autonomous ships to the modern mariner.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION
1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The main section of this study summarizes overall trends and provides a global overview about development trend of maritime transport. However, as highlighted in its main findings, technology and automation evolves in different ways in different contexts and environments. While in some countries, certain conditions may allow a new technology to find its way to the market, in other countries such a facilitating environment may not exist. Another factor identified is that the mechanisms behind the introduction of technology and automation in transport are complex. By highlighting general trends, as was mainly done in the Transport 2040: Automation, Technology, Employment – The Future of Work report, a number of interesting details are presented that may help the reader acquire a better understanding of the background and the dynamics in introducing technology and  automation in transport – trends that are not necessarily discernible (Wielgosz, 2017).

The project team also felt that dedicated Technology and Transformation Reports would provide the reader with an enhanced perspective. The concept behind the format of this report is one that has adopted a unified approach to identify the drivers behind the introduction of a certain application of technology or automation in a specific country, and to discuss this application in the context of ship development (Wielgosz, 2017).
Maritime transportation is fundamental to the world economy and importantly, it is a sector facing major changes due to new technologies and automation. The concept of an “autonomous ship” has recently attracted considerable attention from industry, media and labour organizations alike. The term “autonomous ship” potentially has far-reaching implications for daily life around the planet, for global finance and for the approximately 1.6 million seafarers working in shipping today (Naeem, W.; Irwin, G.; Yang, 2012).
The marine community, both research and industry, are working on increasing the ratio of unmanned systems, including full-size vessels, in operations at sea. The levels of control differ on those platforms, from remote operation beyond the line of sight to almost full autonomy on prototype vessels. However, the exploitation of this kind of vessel, at all control levels, requires solving a number of issues regarding the safety of the equipment, potential cargo and other sea users (Wielgosz, 2017).
The aim of this work is to describe how autonomous shipping has been modernized to modern mariner which is fully digitalized.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT
Moving from autonomous ships to modern mariner are quickly becoming a reality due to technological advancement, making shipping safer and more efficient. However, traditional tasks and functions are becoming blurred as new technology changes how the unique needs of different sectors are met. In addition to large vessels dedicated to the transport of goods and cargos across the oceans, major efforts are underway towards the automation of small coastal shipping that includes ferries, tugboats, supply and service vessels, and barges. Modern mariners are also replacing autonomous ships for inspecting and servicing pipelines, drilling platforms and other offshore installations.

    1. 3                                 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main aim of this study is to carry out a research on how autonomous ships have technologically advanced to modern mariner. The objectives of these technological changes are:

  1. making shipping safer and more efficient
  2. To wirelessly or automatically control ships
  3. Highlight the overall trends and provides a global overview about developments.

    1. 4                                SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Automated shipping is explored in terms of economics, technology, safety and the environment under the broad themes of ship design and engineering, command and control, navigation, communications, security, regulatory issues, and training. This includes initiatives for autonomous shipping as well as civilian implications of military ship automation programs.
This research work will throw more light on the technological trend of ship transport. This study will also be designed to be of immense benefit to all the users of ship and seaferers.

    1. 5                                    APPLICATION OF THE STUDY

This book is primarily for maritime professionals, regulatory authorities, insurers, and environmental groups. It also suits undergraduate students involved in deck officer training, and graduate students and academics involved in research in ship design, operations and management.

1.6                                                  LIMITATION OF STUDY
As we all know that no human effort to achieve a set of goals goes without difficulties, certain constraints were encountered in the course of carrying out this project and they are as follows:-

  1. Difficulty in information collection: I found it too difficult in laying hands of useful information regarding this work and this course me to visit different libraries and internet for solution.

Financial Constraint:        Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time Constraint:   The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

1.7                                                PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose for inventing  modern mariner functions is to improve the efficiency of the ship’s operation as well as the performance and/or safety of the function with crew in attendance.

1.8                                             RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In the course of carrying this study, numerous sources were used which most of them are by visiting libraries, consulting journal and news papers and online research which Google was the major source that was used.

1.9                                    PROJECT ORGANISATION The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work, chapter two presents the literature review of the study,  chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
