DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A DRIVER STAGE OF A 100W AUDIO AMPLIFIER
Driver stage of an amplifier is an amplifier circuit used to control amplifier output circuit, such as a high-power transistor. They are usually used to regulate current flowing through a circuit or are used to control the other factors such as other components, some devices in the circuit. The term is often used, for example, for a specialized integrated circuit that controls high-power switches in switched-mode power converters. Driver stage(s) of a circuit requires different characteristics to other circuit stages. For example in a transistor power amplifier, typically the driver circuit requires current gain, often the ability to discharge the following transistor bases rapidly, and low output impedance to avoid or minimize distortion.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
A driver amplifier is an electronic amplifier that prepares a small electrical signal for further amplification or processing. A driver amplifier is often placed close to the sensor to reduce the effects of noise and interference. It is used to boost the signal strength to drive the cable to the main instrument without significantly degrading the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The noise performance of a preamplifier is critical. According to Friis's formula, when the gain of the preamplifier is high, the SNR of the final signal is determined by the SNR of the input signal and the noise figure of the preamplifier.
In a home audio system, the term 'preamplifier' may sometimes be used to describe equipment which merely switches between input stage and output stage, so that no actual amplification may be involved. In an audio system, the second amplifier is typically a power amplifier (power amp). The driver amplifier provides voltage gain (e.g., from 10 mV to 1 V) but no significant current gain. The power amplifier provides the higher current necessary to drive loudspeakers.
Driver amplifier may be:
- incorporated into the housing or chassis of the amplifier they feed
- in a separate housing
- mounted within or near the signal source.
1.2 OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The main objective of this work is to design and construct a driver stage audio amplifier that will be used to power 100w audio amplifier. A 100W Audio Power amplifiers may be called upon to supply power ranging from a few watts in an audio amplifier to a load (speaker).
1.3 APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
Important applications include in public address systems, theatrical and concert sound reinforcement systems, and domestic systems such as a stereo or home-theatre system. Instrument amplifiers including guitar amplifiers and electric keyboard amplifiers also use driver stage audio amplifiers. In some cases, the driver stage amplifier for an instrument is integrated into a single amplifier "head" which contains a preamplifier, tone controls, and electronic effects. In other cases, musicians may create a setup with separate rack mount preamplifiers, equalizers, and a power amplifier in a separate chassis.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
Driver amplifier is mostly commonly used to amplify signals from the preamplifier or from other input signal in order to control power switches in semiconductor devices. Driver amplifier often take on additional functions which include isolating the control circuit and the power circuit.
1.5 LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT
1. Two or more transistors have to be used.
2. It requires two equal and opposite voltages at the input. Therefore push pull circuit requires the use of driver stage to furnish these signals.
3. If the parameter of the two transistors are not the same, there will be unequal amplification of two halves of the signal.
4. The circuit gives more distortion.
