A smart phone has variety of uses and becomes one of the most important devices now adays. This work describes the design and operation of an intelligence security door using smartphone through Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) technology. Programmed using Android, the smartphone can lock and unlock the door within WiFi range. Android application is designed usingEclipse and a Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) is used as the main controller of the design. This design is able to work within maximum range of 40 meters and 150 meters. Smartphone activated door lock using WiFi has been designed, implemented and tested successfully.
INTRODUCTION
The security has always been a matter of concern since thedawnoftheevolutionofcommunity.Theoriginofdoorlock can be traced back as far as 4000 B.C., in Egypt,Greeceand Iraq. These locks shared the same basic principle of pinlockstodaywherepinsofvaryinglengthpreventedaccesstothedoorunlessthematchingkeywasinsertedtolineupthe pins and access the door. Then, all the door access systemwereprovidedwithtraditionaldeadlocksystemwhereapersonneeded to keep his keys with himself all the time when he/sheisnotathome.Thistraditionalsystemoftenleadstothesituationoflosingkeysandbreakingthedoortoaccessasa consequence. Moreover, carrying keys all the time is not asafe enough. This is when the technology arrived to ease thedooraccesssystem (Young, 2018).
Securityforhomeapplianceshasbecomeachallengeinthesepresentdays.Eventhoughlotoftechniquesandmeasures exist to provide security over them, there are stillquestionsoneaseoftheiruses.Creation of secured access path to offices, homes, hotels, industries etc. has been a successful discovery of man. As a result of this, it has been possible to create door/gates that are well secured using intelligent devices.
Nowadays,thecapabilityofsmartphonesisastonishing.ASmartphoneiscapabletohandleapplications that can perform a wide variety of functions.The purpose of this project is to simplify the tasks oflockingandunlockingthedoorandtoincreasethesecurityof the door locking system. The design used solenoid lockandPeripheralInterfaceController(PIC)asthemainparts. The WiFi module and PIC are placed inside thehome,apartmentorbuildingwhichisnexttothedoor.ThedesignwillbemanagedthroughtheAndroidapplicationinthe smartphone to unlock and lock the door automatically.The proposed design is also user friendly, where there is areset button inside house to allow user to exit the doorduringemergencysituation.
Different access control automation techniques are available to reduce the system complexity and lower costs, these systems do not incorporate complex and expensive components. A home gateway is implemented to facilitate the interoperability between heterogeneous networks and provide a consistent interface, regardless of the accessing device (Sivarao et al, 2012).
Recently, a lot of researchers have developed atechnologybasedhomesecurityandautomation.Fedelin et al, [2013] developed application for controllingaccess cabinet using Microsoft SQL Server ManagementStudio for managing the database of the users. This designrequires a server which is costly but useful in office areawhere a controlling system is needed to control peopleaccessingthe cabinet.
Ismail et al (2014) discussedtheongoingprojectusingBluetoothtechnologytocontroltheaccessofthe door locking using Android and Arduino. By usingBluetooth, the door locking system only can be accessedwithinshorterrangecomparedtoWiFitechnology.
Aims
The main aim of this project is to build an intelligence security door using smartphone through Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) technology
Objectives
The main aim of this project is to develop an embedded system which is used to verify an authorized person into a room. The objectives of this work are:
- To simplify the tasks oflockingandunlockingthedoor
- Toincreasethesecurityof the door locking system
- Replace the traditional door lock system which is using mechanical lock and key mechanism with embedded system.
- To produce a security system that will be simple in its operation, cost effective, durable and easily maintainable.
- To ensures maximum and adequate security in our home and offices.
- To create a comfort in the minds of house owners when they out from their premises without much fear of intruder.
Problem statement
The need for having a constant home protection has always been there. But in the recent times, considering a dramatic rise in petty crimes like robbery and theft, the need has been more strongly felt to have a fool proof protection of the belongings and the family members. Homesecurity has come a long way in the last few decades. It was in the hands of a guard who manually provided surveillance during nights in the earlier days, but it was not fool proof as it was only normal for him to have momentary lapse of concentration. This device brought solution to this need. It ensures adequate protection using wifi technology.
Justification
Security systems are very important in the protection of lives, premises and valuable resources. There are many advanced methods of providing security that have been developed and are in use in the last few decades,oneimportantareaisthesecuritysystemrequiredforstrategicapplicationssuchasmilitarybases, researchcenters,laboratoriesandothercriticalfacilities.Suchadvancedsecuritysystemsarecomplexand expensive making them implementable in high end applications only. However, with recent progress in technology and the growing need for increased security in civilian and other applications, many low cost solutions for security system have emerged with a range of degrees of sophistication, complexity and cost (Potts et al, 2012). It was because of all these benefits that motivated us to carry out this work.
Block diagram of the propose system
Figure-1showstheblockdiagramoftheproposed door locking design. The block diagram consistsofonetransmitterandonereceiver.Bothofthem arecommunicatingusingWiFistandard,whichisIEEE802.11. In this design, an Android smartphone with WiFiaccess is functioning as the transmitter. The receiver partsconsist of a PIC, WiFi module, relay, and solenoid doorlock. When the correct IP address and port number arereceived, the solenoid lock will be activated and it willunlockthedoorfor5seconds.Besides,thereisareset buttontounlockthedoorfrominsidethehouse.Thisisusefulforemergencyexitespeciallyforhomeowner.
