A smartphone has variety of uses and becomes one of the most important devices nowadays. This work describes the design and operation of an intelligence security door using smartphone through Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) technology. Programmed using Android, the smartphone can lock and unlock the door within WiFi range. Android application is designed using Eclipse and a Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) is used as the main controller of the design. This design is able to work within maximum range of 40 meters and 150 meters. Smartphone activated door lock using WiFi has been designed, implemented and tested successfully.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The security has always been a matter of concern since the dawn of the evolution of community. The origin of door lock can be traced back as far as 4000 B.C., in Egypt, Greece and Iraq. These locks shared the same basic principle of pin locks today where pins of varying length prevented access to the door unless the matching key was inserted to line up the pins and access the door. Then, all the door access system were provided with traditional deadlock system where a person needed to keep his keys with himself all the time when he/she is not at home. This traditional system often leads to the situation of losing keys and breaking the door to access as a consequence. Moreover, carrying keys all the time is not a safe enough. This is when the technology arrived to ease the door access system (Young, 2018).
Security for home appliances has become a challenge in these present days. Even though lot of techniques and measures exist to provide security over them, there are still questions on ease of their uses. Creation of secured access path to offices, homes, hotels, industries etc. has been a successful discovery of man. As a result of this, it has been possible to create door/gates that are well secured using intelligent devices.
Nowadays, the capability of smartphones is astonishing. A Smartphone is capable to handle applications that can perform a wide variety of functions. The purpose of this project is to simplify the tasks of locking and unlocking the door and to increase the security of the door locking system. The design used solenoid lock and Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) as the main parts. The WiFi module and PIC are placed inside the home, apartment or building which is next to the door. The design will be managed through the Android application in the smartphone to unlock and lock the door automatically. The proposed design is also user friendly, where there is a reset button inside house to allow user to exit the door during emergency situation.
Different access control automation techniques are available to reduce the system complexity and lower costs, these systems do not incorporate complex and expensive components. A home gateway is implemented to facilitate the interoperability between heterogeneous networks and provide a consistent interface, regardless of the accessing device (Sivarao et al, 2012).
Recently, a lot of researchers have developed a technology based home security and automation. Fedelin et al, [2013] developed application for controlling access cabinet using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio for managing the database of the users. This design requires a server which is costly but useful in office area where a controlling system is needed to control people accessing the cabinet.
Ismail et al (2014) discussed the ongoing project using Bluetooth technology to control the access of the door locking using Android and Arduino. By using Bluetooth, the door locking system only can be accessed within shorter range compared to WiFi technology.

Aims
The main aim of this project is to build an intelligence security door using smartphone through Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) technology
1.3 Objectives
The main aim of this project is to develop an embedded system which is used to verify an authorized person into a room. The objectives of this work are:
- To simplify the tasks of locking and unlocking the door
- To increase the security of the door locking system
- Replace the traditional door lock system which is using mechanical lock and key mechanism with embedded system.
- To produce a security system that will be simple in its operation, cost effective, durable and easily maintainable.
- To ensures maximum and adequate security in our home and offices.
- To create a comfort in the minds of house owners when they out from their premises without much fear of intruder.
1.4 Problem statement
The need for having a constant home protection has always been there. But in the recent times, considering a dramatic rise in petty crimes like robbery and theft, the need has been more strongly felt to have a fool proof protection of the belongings and the family members. Home security has come a long way in the last few decades. It was in the hands of a guard who manually provided surveillance during nights in the earlier days, but it was not fool proof as it was only normal for him to have momentary lapse of concentration. This device brought solution to this need. It ensures adequate protection using wifi technology.
1.5 Justification
Security systems are very important in the protection of lives, premises and valuable resources. There are many advanced methods of providing security that have been developed and are in use in the last few decades, one important area is the security system required for strategic applications such as military bases, research centers, laboratories and other critical facilities. Such advanced security systems are complex and expensive making them implementable in high end applications only. However, with recent progress in technology and the growing need for increased security in civilian and other applications, many low cost solutions for security system have emerged with a range of degrees of sophistication, complexity and cost (Potts et al, 2012). It was because of all these benefits that motivated us to carry out this work.
