This work is on a thermal conductivity measuring equipment. Thermal conduction is a heat transfer mechanism. It is present in our everyday lives. Studying thermal conductivity helps us better understand the phenomenon of heat conduction. The goal of this paper is to measure the thermal conductivity of various materials and compare results with the values provided by the manufacturers. To achieve this we assembled a measuring instrument and performed measurements on heat insulating materials.
CHAPTER ONE1.0 INTRODCUTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Energy studies require the knowledge of the value of many thermophysical properties. Values of these properties for a variety of substances and materials are available [Eckert et al, 2019]. However, for new materials which appear regularly, it is important to be familiar with some basic methods of measuring these properties.
Thermal conductivity is a physical property of materials which is of great importance in physics and engineering. Unlike some physical properties, however, thermal conductivity cannot be directly measured. To determine a material thermal conductivity, intermediate quantities must be determined from which the conductivity may be ultimately calculated [Vasudeva, 2011].
Thermal phenomena, such as heat transfer, are abstract processes, so their illustration is very important for future engineers.
The spreading of heat is an energy transfer, which occurs because of a temperature difference. The phenomenon’s fundamental processes are thermal conduction, thermal convection, and thermal radiation.
Thermal conduction takes place in solid objects and in fluids and gases in a stationary state. The spreading of heat in solid objects occurs by the vibration of atoms, by elastic elementary waves, and the diffusion of free electrons in the conductors also contribute to this phenomenon [Bihari, 2019]. In fluids and gases the molecular displacement is significant, here the heat conduction is due to inordinate thermal movement. In this latter case it’s the collisions that deliver the energy from the warmer side to the cooler side [Kakucs, 2005].
Convection occurs in flowing media. The particles move relative to each other macroscopically and by this movement they carry their energy with them [Bihari, 2019].
In the case of radiation there is no transmitting medium, the energy is spreading in the form of electromagnetic waves. In this paper we present an item of equipment we created that provides a better understanding of the process of thermal conduction.
1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The aim of this project is to build a machine that measures the thermal properties of some material. The objectives are:
- To setup the device.
- To measure the thermal conductivity of various materials and compare results with the values provided by the manufacturers.
- To ensure accuracy in the measurement
This work only covers the design of an equipment that operate on a steady state absolute measurement method, based on the "Hot Plate" principle.
1.4 SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY
Achieving the set objectives of this work will enable us to have adequate knowledge of materials with good thermal conductivity.
The results may be sufficient to tell us the efficiency of these materials. Thus, it will be important to create awareness to the general public, on which of the materials to go for, while constructing buildings in order to get maximum thermal comfort.
For engineering students, this study will become an important tools that link the theoretical knowledge of various phenomena and processes with practice, in order to provide better understanding of the subjects. Instruction- al equipment is able to illustrate processes that are a combination of both concrete and abstract concepts. Thermal phenomena, such as heat transfer, are abstract processes, so their illustration is very important for future engineers.
