ABSTRACT

The work is on arduino based battery charging system. The battery charger presented here is designed to charge batteries. An Auto turn off battery charger proceeds to charge battery automatically. When the battery is charged it will shut off using arduino which is the main aim of the study.
Method: The device was first built on a breadboard which is later transfer to vero board and soldered.
Result: The device was completely built and coupled, the result during the test shows that the charger was able to respond to its operation when a 12V, 7Ah battery was connected it.
Conclusion and Recommendation: At the end of this project – battery charger, this device was built and tested. This type of device is important because there are many rechargeable devices that use 12v battery. I recommend that device should not be used for any other device lower or higher than 12v rating.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0                                INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study
An arduino based battery charging system is an electrical device employed in charging acid batteries known as “lead acid battery”. This charger automatically shut off the charging process when battery attains full charge. This prevents the deep charge of the battery. If the battery voltage is below the set value, then circuit automatically charges the battery.
The Automatic Battery Charger circuit presented here can automatically charge a 12V, 7Ah battery, or above. Special features of the charger are as follows. It automatically controls the charging current as per the status of the battery. Battery voltage level as well as charging status is indicated on the LCD display. The charger maintains float voltage, if battery is fully charged. Arduino identifies status of the battery connection and voltage, and indicates the same on the LCD. This work is focusing on developing a battery charger circuit controlled using arduino uno board.

1.2 Problem Statement

In the last decade battery charger built then only charge and keep charging the battery even when the battery is fully charged, and this exposes the battery to overcharge and explosion, this can also cause a lot of headaches and prevent us from getting the life expectancy out of the batteries we purchase. To solve this problem, an arduino based battery charger was built. The arduino displays voltage and status of the battery (assuming that battery is not dead).

1.3 Hypothesis/Research Questions
There is a significant relationship between arduino module and the charger.

1.4 Aim and Objective of Study
The main aim of this work is to build a battery charger circuit controlled using arduino uno board. The objectives are:

  • To build a digital battery charger.
  • To indicate the charging status of a battery via LCD
  • To run an arduino program

    1.5 Significance of Study

This study will serve as an eye opener to all readers in that it will help them to understand how an arduino is interfaced with LCD. This study will be of great benefit to all producers of battery charger in helping them to understand the need for displaying the voltage and status of the battery.

1.6 Scope of Study

The scope of this work covers the use of LCD to display the voltage and status of the battery under charge. This device charge e battery in different stage i.e. bulk stage charging and float stage charging. The 16×2 LCD is for better visual indication of charging status of battery and fully charged.

1.7 Limitations of Study
This charger can only be used for 12v batteries. It is more costly than the conventional charger. It has an automatic charging voltage and current capacity according to the battery status.

1.8
Definitions of terms

Arduino: Arduino is an open-source hardware and software company, project, and user community that designs and manufactures single-board microcontrollers and microcontroller kits for building digital devices.
Filter - any electrical circuit or mechanical device that removes or attenuates energy at certain frequencies.
Battery charger: is a device that provides electricity to convert into stored chemical energy for storage in an electrochemical cell by running an electric current through it.
